कैलाश पर्वत तिब्बत में स्थित एक पर्वत श्रृंखला है, इसके पश्चिम और दक्षिण में मानसरोवर और रक्षास्थल झीलें हैं।

कैलास पर्वत से कई महत्वपूर्ण नदियाँ निकलती हैं - ब्रह्मपुत्र, सिंधु, सतलुज आदि। इसे हिंदू सनातन धर्म में पवित्र माना जाता है।

इस तीर्थ को अष्टपद, गणपर्वत और रजतगिरि के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। यह कैलाश और उससे सटे मानसरोवर की बर्फ से ढकी 6,638 मीटर ऊंची चोटी का तीर्थ है। और इस क्षेत्र को मानसखंड कहा जाता है। पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार, भगवान ऋषभदेव ने यहां निर्वाण प्राप्त किया था। श्री भरतेश्वर स्वामी मंगलेश्वर श्री ऋषभदेव भगवान के पुत्र भरत ने दिग्विजय के समय इस पर विजय प्राप्त की थी। पांडवों के दिग्विजय प्रयास के दौरान अर्जुन ने इस क्षेत्र पर विजय प्राप्त की थी। युधिष्ठिर के राजसूय यज्ञ में इस क्षेत्र के राजा ने उत्तम घोड़े, सोना, रत्न और याक की पूंछ से बने काले और सफेद चमार भेंट किए। इनके अलावा भी यहां कई अन्य ऋषियों के निवास का उल्लेख मिलता है। कैलाश श्रेणी कश्मीर से भूटान तक फैली हुई है और ल्हा चू और झोंग चू के बीच कैलाश पर्वत है, जिसकी उत्तरी चोटी का नाम कैलाश है। इस शिखर की आकृति एक विशाल शिवलिंग के समान है।



यह पर्वतों से बने षोडशदल कमल के मध्य में स्थित है। यह हमेशा बर्फ से ढका रहता है। इसकी परिक्रमा का महत्व बताया गया है। तिब्बती (लामा) कैलाश मानसरोवर की तीन या तेरह परिक्रमाओं का महत्व मानते हैं और अनेक तीर्थयात्रियों को दंड देकर एक जन्म, दस परिक्रमाएं एक चक्र के पापों का नाश करती हैं। 108 परिक्रमा पूरी करने वालों को जन्म-मरण से मुक्ति मिल जाती है। कैलाश-मानसरोवर के लिए कई मार्ग हैं, लेकिन उत्तराखंड के पिथौरागढ़ जिले में अस्कोट, धारचूला, खेत, गरबयांग, कालापानी, लिपुलेख, खिंड, तकलाकोट के माध्यम से मार्ग अपेक्षाकृत आसान है। [3] यह खंड 544 किमी (338 मील) लंबा है और इसमें कई उतार-चढ़ाव हैं। सरलकोट के रास्ते में 70 किमी (44 मील) की चढ़ाई होती है और उसके बाद 74 किमी (46 मील) की चढ़ाई होती है। रास्ते में कई धर्मशालाएं और आश्रम हैं जहां यात्रियों के ठहरने की सुविधा है।


गरविआंग में आगे की यात्रा के लिए याक, खच्चर, कुली आदि उपलब्ध हैं। तकलाकोट तिब्बत का पहला गांव है जहां हर साल ज्येष्ठ से कार्तिक तक एक बड़ा बाजार लगता है। मानसरोवर तकलाकोट से तारचेन के रास्ते में पड़ता है। कैलाश की परिक्रमा तारचेन से शुरू होकर वहीं समाप्त होती है। तकलाकोट से 40 किमी (25 मील) की दूरी पर स्थित गुरला दर्रा, 4,938 मीटर (16,200 फीट) की ऊंचाई पर, मंधाता पर्वत पर स्थित है। इसके बीच में पहले बाईं ओर मानसरोवर और दाईं ओर राक्षस ताल है। उत्तर की ओर, कैलाश पर्वत की बर्फ से ढकी धवल चोटी का सुंदर दृश्य देखा जा सकता है। दर्रे के अंत में तीर्थपुरी नामक स्थान है जिसमें गर्म पानी के झरने हैं। इन झरनों के आसपास चंखरी टीले हैं। कहा जाता है कि भस्मासुर ने यहीं तपस्या की थी और यहीं पर भस्म भी हुई थी। इसके आगे डोलमाला और देवीखिंद हैं, इनकी ऊंचाई 5,630 मीटर है।

पास ही गौरीकुंड है। रास्ते में विभिन्न स्थानों पर तिब्बती लामाओं के मठ हैं। यात्रा में आमतौर पर दो महीने लगते हैं और यात्री बारिश शुरू होने से पहले ज्येष्ठ महीने के अंत तक अल्मोड़ा लौट जाते हैं। इस क्षेत्र में एक सुगंधित वनस्पति है जिसे कैलास धूप कहा जाता है। लोग उन्हें प्रसाद के रूप में लाते हैं। कैलाश पर्वत को भगवान शिव का घर कहा जाता है। वहाँ, बर्फ में, भोले नाथ शंभु दयापूर्वक अज्ञात (ब्रह्म) की तपस्या में लीन हैं, शांत, अचल, एकान्त तप में लीन। शिव एक ऐसा रूप है जो इस धन और प्रकृति का ब्रह्म है और हर जीव की आत्मा है, क्योंकि अब तक हम यही जानते हैं। कैलाश पर्वत भगवान शिव और भगवान आदिनाथ के कारण दुनिया के सबसे पवित्र स्थानों में से एक है। कैलाश पर्वत का वर्णन हमारे संस्कृत साहित्य की अनेक कविताओं में मिलता है। जैसा कि महान कवि माघ द्वारा रचित महाकाव्य शिशुपालवधाम के पहले सर्ग में वर्णित है।
